Martial Arts and Combat Sports CALL “Special Edition”

Martial arts and combat sports in Brazil and around the world: tensions, propositions and perspectives

Martial Arts and Combat Sports (MACS) are fundamental aspects of movement culture, alongside sports, dances, gymnastics among other physical activities. These practices hold significant socio-cultural importance, having been developed by various societies throughout history. Given their diverse purposes, including health, entertainment, and competition, MACS should be integrated into teaching, learning, and training processes.

In recent years, there has been growing academic interest in understanding MACS's specificities, leading to increased research, educational initiatives, and professional development programs. However, some practices remain rooted in historical norms, which may lead to a gap of scientific reflection and intervention in professional contexts.

Authors such as Bowman (2021) emphasize the complexity of studying martial arts, which involve various disciplines and intersect with media, culture, law, and education. Recognizing this complexity, we invite researchers worldwide to engage in projects exploring MACS in contemporary contexts.

Our aim is to collectively reflect on MACS, considering their traditions, historical significance, and cultural diversity, while also incorporating new theoretical and methodological approaches. Revista Conexões, affiliated with the Faculty of Physical Education at the State University of Campinas (Unicamp), is committed to fostering critical and scientific discussions on MACS across different academic disciplines.
