Abstract

Physical activity has been identified as an effective strategy to reduce and minimize the
effects of stress, which has risen, more and more young people at the time of entrance
exam. Thus, the aim of this study verified the effects of 16-week physical conditioning
program on stress level in university freshmen. 35 freshmen volunteers participated in this
study, sedentary 18 to 30 years. The level of stress and its symptoms were assessed by
using the Stress Symptom Inventory Lipp (ISSL) before and after intervention. The
training session had aerobic and muscular endurance exercises, (60min, three sessions/
week). For the analysis of data collected on ISSL, tables of correction phases and the
symptoms of stress were accessed. At the beginning of the program 48,58% of freshmen
showed stress and the final value decreased to 37,14%. The freshmen who had physical
symptoms at the beginning were 4.57 ± 2.94 and after training this value reduced to 3.83 ±
3.57, and psychological symptoms decreased by 4.80 ± 3.77 at the beginning to 4.23 ±
3.04 after training. There was a change in the phase of stress in which the volunteers were,
at the beginning all of them were in the resistance phase (48.58%), whereas the end
predominated phase resistance (31.42%) compared to the alert phase (2.85%). It is
concluded that there was a decrease in the prevalence of stress in college freshmen after 16
weeks of physical conditioning. Moreover, there was reduction of physical and
psychological symptoms and change in the stress phase where the volunteers were,
showing that this program has had positive influence on reducing stress levels.
