Abstract

The prevalence of motor delays and less participation in physical activities have been
associated with excess weight in children. The aim of this study was to investigate the
associations between in locomotor and object control’ motor performance and nutritional
status of children. It is a cross-sectional study. Ninety-five children participated in the
study with ages between 6 and 7 year-old. The body mass index (BMI) and the Center of
Disease Control’ curves were used to assess nutritional status. Motor assessment was assessed using the Test of Gross Motor Development-2 (TGMD-2), validated for the
brazilian population. Pearson correlation was used to analyze associations between motor
performance and nutritional status. Significant, moderate and negative associations were
found between the BMI and TGMD-2 scores (r= -.44; p=.03) and between the BMI and
locomotion TGMD-2 scores (r= -.43; p=.04) only for obese children. The results showed
that the obesity was associated with the motor impairments, primarily in locomotion skills,
observed in the children. The inclusion of children in motor activities is an important
strategy to reduce motor delays and the obesity comorbidit.
