Abstract

The aim of this study is to describe and critically analyze the career development of
athletes considering several variables that may influence the progression and success of the
individual in sports. This study characterizes as a literature review that uses as theoretic
basis the Holistic Athletic Career Model, and proposes the observation of different levels
as athletic, psychological, social, academic and vocational. This conception has the basic
assumption that there is a sequence of phases and transitions that are relatively common in
the lives of athletes in each level, and even the scientific literature describes such levels
independently, it is necessary to consider that there is a significant interaction between
them. The holistic approach proposes a reflection on the current models of athlete support
and recommends the adoption of a broad and integrative perspective of the elements that
can guide managers, coaches and the athletes themselves in the structuring of an enabling
environment for sports success.
