Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to: (1) compare the muscular power of the lower limbs (LL) between obese and non-obese elderly women and (2) correlate the fat-free mass (FFM) with lower limb muscle power in physically active elderly people. Methodology: The sample consisted of 32 physically active elderly women. Height and body mass (BM) were obtained using a digital scale with an attached stadiometer. The presence of obesity was assessed by Body Mass Index (BMI) ≥ 30 kg/m². To obtain the MLG, the bioelectrical impedance method was used. To measure the muscular power of the lower limbs, a force platform (EMG, System do Brasil®) was used, on which the Counter Movement Jump (CMJ) jump test was performed. The Mann Whitney test was used to compare groups. Pearson or Spearman correlations were used. Results and Discussion: As expected, MC (p<0.0000), BMI (p<0.0000) and FFM (p<0.010) were significantly higher in obese elderly women compared to non-obese women. No statistically significant differences were observed in absolute power (p=0.45), power relative to MC (P=0.08) and power relative to FFM (p=0.97) between obese and non-obese elderly women. There was a positive and significant correlation between the absolute power of the lower limbs and FFM considering the total sample (r=0.76, p<0.001), with the variation in FFM explaining 58% of the variation in the absolute power of lower limbs observed. among the elderly. Conclusion: The present study demonstrated that the presence of obesity did not affect lower limb muscle power in physically active elderly women.
