Resumo
Um número considerável de estudos qualitativos se ocupou em relacionar a emigração europeia aos seus efeitos sobre o desenvolvimento econômico no sul do Brasil. Todavia, informações quantitativas sobre o tipo de ocupações, conhecimento e status social dos imigrantes e de seus descendentes são escassas. Sabe-se pouco sobre a mobilidade social e ocupacional dos imigrantes e de seus filhos. Ao utilizar dados originais extraídos dos registros da Igreja Luterana de Blumenau, desenvolvemos uma análise original contendo informações sobre o tipo de ocupação dos imigrantes e de seus descendentes em Blumenau. Usando técnicas de ciências de rede, identificamos sete clusters ocupacionais. Investigando a mobilidade ocupacional intergeracional e social entre 1856 e 1940, os resultados mostram que 20.9% ascendeu, 24.9% descendeu e 54.9% permaneceram na mesma classe social. Entretanto, a probabilidade de ascensão social era significativamente maior para filhos de pais com ocupações de caráter artesanal do que pais ocupados em atividades de baixa habilidade, como embaladores.
