Reflections and perspectives of Edgard Morin’s pertinent knowledge in the scope of the healthy city

Abstract

Enlightenment thinking submits human intelligence to the path of rationality, institutionalizes and consolidates sectorization, and distances the ideas of work, housing, and leisure in the urban environment. The increase in expectations and quality of life in the last century does not represent a decisive field. However, it is accompanied by the crisis of capitalism, urban space, and planning. As a proposal to promote quality of life, the concept of healthy cities was proposed at the end of the 20th century. Edgard Morin's Complex Thinking can contribute to overcoming the current limitations of urban planning within the scope of conception. This research aims to reflect on the contributions of one of Edgard Morin's Seven Knowledge, the "Pertinent Knowledge", and the proposal of Healthy Cities for new positioning of urban planning under the perspective of the urban environment in the 21st century. It was possible to explore conceptual approaches and reflect on their similarities through historical materialism and literature review. From the reflection carried out, we pointed contributions that the two fields studied present to overcome crises in the order of urban planning, as well as to the formation of a new perception of the world, through the transformation of the individual and the relationships between the local and global.
