Abstract
This article refers to a study developed in Brazil and Portugal in the context of community artistic practices, particularly theatre. This field has had a strong expansion in recent years, both in terms of practice and of academic production, capturing the attention of different disciplinary areas. Contemporary artistic creation has been increasingly interested in integrating the participatory dimension in its practices. Simultaneously, community education, social action and activism have developed proposals that deepen the connection with artistic languages. The present study aimed to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the creative processes developed by six theatre groups, three in each country, as well as to deepen the relationship between these artistic practices and civic and political participation. Based on a qualitative approach, it resorted to interviews and focus groups, with the collaboration of eighty people, including non-professional artists, professionals, and group partners. The main reflections point to an update of the defining elements of community artistic practices, the relevance of the quality of cultural and artistic participation, as well as to developed theatre conceptions and perceived effects that suggest different outlines in the relationship between these practices and civic and political participation.
