Abstract
The present paper aims at analyzing entries of the lexical item mulher [woman] extracted from Type 4 dictionaries recommended by the Brazilian Education Ministry official document PNLD – Dicionários (2012) [Brazilian Textbook Program – Dictionaries]. The main goal is to evaluate female representation in these dictionaries, which are targeted to high school users. Departing from a cognitive-semantic view of meaning, cognitive models and frames evoked by mulher were identified based on occurrences extracted from a corpus and were then compared to the semantic information contained in the entries: senses, usage labeling, examples, and the wording of definitions. The analysis shows that the dictionaries evaluated present a lexical-conceptual network that reproduces stereotypical attributes and conceptualizations that are not in accordance to the social roles and current expectations related to female representation.
