Abstract

This paper aims at investigating the role of functional factors in the semantic compatibility between verbs and the passive construction in Brazilian Portuguese. Specifically, we analyze the Affectedness Restriction (Pinker et al, 1987) and the Agent Defocusing Function (Shibatani, 1985, 2006), concluding that those aspects of meaning are gradual and complementary constraints. Besides that it is shown that the passive construction has a conventionalized scenario as an aspect of its meaning, which functions as a type of coercion mechanism. The conventionalized scenario licenses the compatibility of some verbs that, otherwise, would not be used in the passive, being responsible for extending the coverage of the construction.
