Abstract
Volume 13 of the journal PARC Research in Architecture and Construction brings together articles in the Articles, Dossier, Review Articles and Communications sections, covering the themes of the impact of climate change on the built environment, environmental performance, architecture and performance, heritage, city and digitization. The impacts of climate change on the built environment, the subject of the Dossier section, are presented with a strong focus on the urban environment, which reinforces the fact that polluting activities that trigger global warming and associated climate phenomena have been exacerbated by urbanization processes. Environmental performance is expressively addressed in this issue. Some works are justified by data on the Brazilian housing deficit, the huge amount of irregular housing in the world and the need to improve performance and promote adequate levels of environmental comfort in housing. Considering the performance of building elements, especially on the sun exposure of facades, a series of articles in this volume present applications and propositions of building systems or strategies aimed at increasing the performance of buildings. Architectural design is also a determinant of internal environmental constraints, characterizing some investigations. The architectural heritage showed how the restoration and conservation of buildings intertwine the legibility of the construction history with the opportunities arising from every reform, given the possibilities of modernization and performance. Articles related to the theme of cities bring, on the one hand, a contribution to aspects related to the quality of life, focusing on a discussion about public and healthy spaces and, on the other hand, the issue of real estate production related to social housing. Finally, the theme of digitization interfaces with Construction 4.0 by discussing how the built environment embodies the technologies that manipulate and capture physical reality in the world of digitized data.
