Scenes from a wedding: from Bergman's lens to Marcuse's Freudian interpretation

Abstract

Our goal is to discuss the tensions experienced in love relationships in modern society. Throughout the journey, our attention will be directed to Bergman film Scenes from a marriage (1973), in which Johan and Marianne marriage and private life, lived out, as the bourgeois ideal of individual fulfillment and happiness, are unmasked in their ritualisms revealing an institution in crisis, full of contradictions and opaque in nature. At first Freud weighein guides the discussion by showing that the secret nature of the affective bond, as well, becomes the source of suffering for us. In this context, we will analyze Hebert Marcuse propositions for whom the unconscious appears to have emancipatory potentialities of sexuality.
