Abstract
The article seeks to demonstrate how the notion of vernacular architecture was built by the architects and intellectuals of the Renaissance since the reception of the classic treatise De Architectura, by Vitruvius. Through an analysis of vitruvianism of the sixteenth century and its relations with the great cultural changes that marked the period, such as the conquest of America and the changes in the artistic field, it is argues that the Vitruvian passage of the origins of architecture was reworked to account for the emergence of the concept of vernacular architecture. The article also analyzes the influence of the new status that the images acquired in the Renaissance in this cultural change.
