Public instruction on the pages of the catholic newspaper O Mariano (1935-1956): contextualizing educational proposals

Abstract

This article discusses public instruction recorded in Santarém, Pará, from 1935 to 1956, a time frame related to the existence of the Catholic newspaper O Mariano, a periodical that was relevant due to the historical context recorded in its pages, based on the Catholic ideology, in which information from various areas appeared, guiding religious indoctrination. The information is intertwined with the political context of Getúlio Vargas' New State, seeking a perception of the State-Church relationship. Amidst the news, it also conveyed information on school education, which determined the research carried out in this communication vehicle of the Marian of the Young’s Congregation of Santarém, a group of lay religious, later being transformed into the official organ of the then Prelature of Santarém, today an archdiocese. In guiding the study, bibliographic and documental research was adopted as a methodological approach and for its historical-critical analysis, problematizations were raised that gave support to the guides, giving the possibility to outline the substance of the analysis regarding the understanding of instruction and its practice in Santarém at that time. The relationship of educational instruction with the possible conceptions given by the Catholic Santarém press in the first half and first decade of the second half of the 20th century was investigated. Implied interests conveyed in the news were found, characterizing the Catholic educational proposal and its interfaces with official guidelines of the Brazilian State in that period.
