Abstract
This paper considers the contemporary European museological scene as the starting point for the debate about how ethnographic collections have been reinterpreted and exhibited under new conditions. The Africa Room of the World Cultures Museum of Barcelona (MCM) is taken here as a case study that brings together contrasting perceptions about what museums with this kind of collection are supposed to be like, how they should deal with their collections, to whom they are addressed and how they can create bridges with other fields of research. Art, anthropology and museology compose the universe of disputes that involved the creation of the MCM in Catalonia in 2015.
