The vertigo of the will of a voracious collector: An interview with Sérgio Carvalho

Abstract

One of the main private collectors of Brazilian artistic production of the years 2000 and 2010, the lawyer and musician Sérgio Carvalho tells us about his criteria for selecting artworks, the dialogue he maintains with artists and women curators to improve his choices and the exhibitions based on his collection – especially Contraponto, presented from November 17, 2017 to April 29, 2018 at the Museu Nacional do Conjunto Cultural da República, in Brasilia. Owner of two performance artworks, Carvalho talks about the purchases and the challenges to establish the terms of the contract. He also addresses the process of institutionalizing his collection and the desire to display it permanently, in a place to be defined.
