Abstract

The visual arts and their narratives involve several agents. Collectors have a particularly
important role, as they bring together material artefacts that can be arranged in seemingly endless ways as historical sources, while also taking their place in the very fabric of historical discourse and contemporary visuality. This analysis of the exhibition Grandfather: a Pioneer like Us, from 1974, aims to understand the dual roles of Harald Szeeman as both curator and collector. Taking this perspective in conjunction with topics raised by Benjamin, we seek to open new ways to re-dimension art history.
