Collective making as a curatorial method: indigenous art, re-occupations and disputes against the colonial imaginary

Abstract

Based on an experience of creating an anti-racist indigenous art exhibition, Hãhãw: Arte Indígena Antirracista, and a series of artistic occupations in Salvador, this article elaborates notions of the collective sense, of collective making as a commonning of curatorial processes. Curatorship and creation are dialogical movements created from shared processes. The first part presents a narrative of the process of research and creation of the exhibition within the research project Cultures of Anti-Racism in Latin America (CARLA), and then on the second part each artist-researcher-curator briefly discusses their work and the context. Some of the processes developed, as described at the end, can be reimagined in new exhibition contexts, such as the recent circulation of the Hãhãw exhibition in different museums in the Northeast.
