Resumo

No início dos anos 1990, W.J.T. Mitchell e Gottfried Boehm proclamaram, de forma independente, que as humanidades estavam testemunhando uma "virada pictórica" ou "icônica". Vinte anos depois, podemos nos perguntar se este anúncio estava descrevendo um evento que já havia ocorrido ou se era um chamado para que isso acontecesse. O mundo contemporâneo é, mais do que nunca, determinado por artefatos visuais. Ainda assim, nosso arsenal conceitual, forjado durante séculos de logocentrismo, ainda está aquém da complexidade do significado pictórico. Este ensaio tem duas partes. Na primeira, tenta avaliar o significado exato da "virada pictórica"/"icônica" e o (re)coloca no contexto dos estudos visuais anglo-americanos e da Bildwissenschaften alemã. Na segunda aborda a famosa afirmação do filólogo Ernst Robert Curtius de que "as ciências da imagem são fáceis" ao defender três "voltas no parafuso" para tornar os estudos visuais algo mais difícil: uma mudança da iconologia para a sintomatologia, uma mudança do extensivo para intensivo e uma mudança do indicativo para o subjuntivo.
