Abstract
Abstract It discusses some actions of extension of the university libraries directed to the community outside their own campi. It aims to reflect on the extension of university libraries in Brazil. It reveals that the Brazilian’s university libraries have assumed the role of agents through these initiatives, though they are still incipient. It shows that such experiences focus on actions dedicated to strength the habit of reading. It puts the information literacy as another possibility for librarian intervention. As conclusion, it is highlighted that the university libraries can change the way how they relate with the society through the extension.
