Philosophy and training for the exercise of citizenship: the citizen in light of Rousseau's political thought

Abstract

The article discusses the issue of training for the exercise of citizenship contained in article 22 of Law 9,393/1996. The problem is formulated in the following terms: is Philosophy relevant in basic education when one of its purposes is to contribute to the common formation for the exercise of citizenship? As a working hypothesis, we seek to show that yes and that the sub-areas of Ethics and Political Philosophy par excellence are essential to the aforementioned training. The reflection on the proposed problem will be conducted in the light of the political thought of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, an important thinker of modernity, especially in the ethical, political and pedagogical fields.
