Abstract
Using data from the 2008-2009 Brazilian Family Budget Survey, the paper analyzes the conditioning factors of the Body Mass Index (BMI) of Brazilian men and women 20 or more years old. The BMI Z-score and the probabilities of overweight or obesity are also analyzed. To illustrate the type of results obtained, consider the conditioning factors of the probability of a woman being obese. This probability is a nonlinear function of age, with a maximum around 59 years old. The relations with schooling and per capita family income also have an inverted U shape. Schooling above 10 years clearly contributes to lower the probability of obesity. Before reaching the richest tenth, the rise in per capita income ceases to contribute to increase that probability. Black color, urban residence and the presence of 0-4 years old children in the family have a positive and significant effect on the probability of women’s obesity.
