Abstract

Transpression represents a deformation that combined contraction and simple shear along strike and dip (thrust) of shear zones, with different proportions. Transpressive deformation is a common characteristic at different orogens along plate convergent margins, as well as at other tectonic environments. Fundamental concepts are revised in an historical perspective of the knowledge evolution after cumulative observations of natural examples and sophistication of theoretical mathematical models. The relationship between transpression with some importante orogenic aspects, as the syntectonic magmatism, strain partitioning and exhumation are also discussed. A study case at the limit between foreland and hinterland of northern Dom Feliciano Belt (Santa Catarina, Brazil), where regional transpressive deformation culminated in strain partitioning among structural domains, is presented to illustrate these concepts and relationships.
