ResumoThe present article tries to study the matter of teaching/learning of textual typology in the secondary level based on Swales's works about genre and Adam'sworks about textual sequence. The point of departure is the secondary school textbook level of communication and expression in the Portuguese language. Eight series of such books published by four publishing companies are analyzed with the purpose of discovering: the role of textual typology in the teaching of reading and writing, how the teaching of typology occurs and what the possible consequences inherent to this way of teaching are.
