Resumo

Why do games in general usually fascinate and involve human beings? Maybe it is because games bring joy, encourage autonomy, develop imagination, contribute to skill development.There must be also countless answers to this question, although I am going to limit myself to trying to describe games in general terms with the help of some authors such as Berne (1964), Caillois (1990), Huizinga (1990), Kishimoto (1994), Piaget (1978), Vygotsky (1991), and others. In this paper I also try to define games in the context of a foreign language classroom with emphasis on the usefulness of different kinds of games in the learning/acquisition process. As I do that, the contributions on learning theories and on the communicative approach by several authors such as Almeida Filho (1978b, 1991,1993), Krashen (1982), Prabhu (1989,1992,1996), Widdowson (1978) among others, cannot be forgotten.
