About the Journal

Scope

Trabalhos em Linguística Aplicada (Papers in Applied Linguistics) is published three times a year by the Graduate Program in Applied Linguistics of the Institute of Language Studies at the State University of Campinas (Unicamp), with volumes published in January-April (n.1), May-August (n.2) and September-December (n.3). Throughout its thirty-year existence, the journal has aimed to disseminate original papers that contribute to the constant innovation and expansion of the field of Applied Linguistics.

We recommend reading the section “Principles of quality and textuality expected by the journal,” as it describes the editors’ expectations of textual and scientific quality of manuscripts. These expectations are the parameters that we take into account in the peer reviewing process and all other stages of the editorial work.

The journal expects that manuscripts submitted for publication include a social and political scope, and are directly linked to contemporary debates in Applied Linguistics, as evidenced by the themes addressed, research issues and dialogue with the literature in the field. The journal’s main areas of research are: interculturality and identities; language education; technologies and social networks; translation; multimodalities and intermedia; language ideologies; linguistic anthropology; language policies; globalization and mobility; discourse and inequality.

The journal also publishes interviews and reviews of recent books that are relevant to the journal’s areas of interest.

Historical perspective

The journal "Trabalhos em Linguística Aplicada" began in 1983, as an initiative of the Department of Applied Linguistics to publish and disseminate the research produced by its members and others working in the field. Little by little, the journal has come to acquire national and international renown. The articles portray the different theoretical/methodological trends in the field and enable the historical scenarios of Applied Linguistics in Brazil be identified and traced over the years. The varied approaches range from the situated study of language in educational contexts to studies of language in society, with transdisciplinary approaches and methods. TLA has also consolidated international cooperation in the applied field through publishing articles by researchers from other parts of the world and through Jan Blommaert's participation as associate editor until his premature death in 2021.

Its abbreviated title is Trab. linguist. apl., which should be used in bibliographies, footnotes and bibliographical references.
