Abstract

The Rio Operations Center (COR) is a control room that gathers representatives of the agencies and secretariats of the City of Rio de Janeiro and monitors the images from the cameras scattered throughout the city. In addition to managing the daily life of the city, the center played an important role in organizing mega events. In this context, the present research explores the influence of COR in the new mediation processes of the urban experience, especially with regard to mobility. As methodology, we used interviews conducted with people who played decisive roles in the creation and operation of the COR, as well as a bibliography dealing with the topics of mediation, mediatization and smart cities. In addition, the concept of cybermobilities helps us to highlight the intertwining of the physical, virtual and communicational dimensions of mobility. The research points out that the center has changed the dynamics of the city's mobilities, mainly due to its integration with navigation and traffic apps and its constant presence in the media and social media.
