Abstract

The article deals with the production of the book Exposé moderne des mathématiques élémentaires, by the
French author Lucienne Félix, and its reception in Brazil by the members of the Mathematics Teaching Study
Group (GEEM), created in São Paulo in 1961. The author argues that the presentation of the work preceded that
of the author, not only in the chronological plane, but also from the point of view of the recognition, legitimacy
and diffusion of ideas of innovation of teaching, within the international wave known as the Modern
Mathematics Movement. In its multiple translations and editions, the book traveled unexpected paths to a work
of secondary school teacher that did not count with the support of the French government. In Brazil, its
circulation was restricted, but it was one of the references for the legitimization of GEEM itself and for the
exchange of teachers with Lucienne Félix, during the 1960s.
