Abstract

This article traces the relationship between a historian of philosophy and the intellectual circle of the Kulturwissenschafltliche Bibliothek Warburg through a group of recently surfaced archival documents. Steeped in the multidisciplinary and collective world of Aby Warburg’s early library in Hamburg, Raymond Klibansky matured along with the library itself, participating in and leading a number of projects at the core of the identity of the Warburg Institute as it was reborn in England in the 1930s, such as the edition of the Latin and Arabic Corpus Platonicum Medii Aevi and the famous Saturn and Melancholy, coauthored with Erwin Panofsky and Fritz Saxl. This brief glance illustrates the persistent focus on pluralism and transmission understood as Nachleben at the heart of the humanist endeavour, and lightly sketches the breadth of this scholar’s work, for whom the Warburgian method formed a kernel of his development and activism throughout the 20th century.
