Abstract
This article investigates the complexities within the relationship between contemporary art and the museum by analyzing contemplação suspensa [suspended contemplation], an artwork developed by artist Rubens Mano for the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo in 2008. It aims to promote a reflection on context-oriented artistic practices and its limits and possibilities when commissioned by art museums in terms of developing a critical approach on the institution. This analysis identifies a critical proposition brought by the artwork from its process of creation on – a process which happens in proximity and in constant negotiation with the museum. The work contemplação suspensa creates a kind of reflection field within the Pinacoteca, inviting the museum to “learn from art and with the artist” as approaching Rubens Mano’s work process.
