A wider city project: The memory of Lina Bo Bardi by Renata Lucas

Abstract

This paper proposes to reflect about two Renata Lucas’ artworks, Projeto Casa de Vidro (2013) and Aqui havia um projeto de cidade (2017), with the purpose of analyzing how the artist discusses and creates friction with her works in relation to the space where they are inserted, that is, the works of the architect Lina Bo Bardi, in the case, respectively, Casa de Vidro and MASP. This analysis is based on the presentation of the uses of public spaces, including the Lina Bo Bardi’s work as a space for encounters and confrontations, and presents the Renata Lucas’ artwork as a friction regarding the urbanization of Avenida Paulista and the (private) uses of collective space. Thus, the memory of Lina Bo Bardi is activated in the Projeto Casa de Vidro (2013) with the emphasis on the glass issue, as material used by Lina Bo Bardi, and its relationship with the House / institution. Renata Lucas, when referring to Lina Bo Bardi’s memory, considers that the architect had a civilizing project, so the artist, in creating a friction with an unknown time, brings to the present a ghost of a possible city.
