Abstract

This article analyzes the presence of the Havana Biennial in the geopolitical global map of the British journal Third Text: Third World Perspectives on Contemporary Art & Culture. The main goal of this paper is to show the way Third Text displaced the category Third World in order to embrace the geo-epistemological standpoint of the Global South. In doing so, the Havana Biennial emerged as the first global art biennial to be properly named as such. In addition to tracking the contributions appeared in the review in which the Havana Biennial are discussed, the article discusses how Third Text criticized the Eurocentric gaze of the West from the postcolonial condition of non-Western art.
