Abstract

This essay aims to investigate possible relationships between the relocation of cultural objects, destruction and repatriation. Our main interest is to think about how violent displacements of objects from their original contexts operate iconoclastic material and symbolic destructions and how restitution alternatives can function as instruments of historical reparation. In order to reflect on these issues, this article examines African objects that are at the heart of the debate on repatriation, such as the Mask of Idia, as well as Brazilian objects of African tradition that help us to think about possibilities of restitution within the context of the same country, such as those belonging to the “Nosso Sagrado” collection.
