Abstract

At the Paleontological and Micropaleontological Laboratory of the Geology Department of the Federal University of Ouro Preto (Degeo/UFOP), undergraduate students carried out the organization and expansion of a microfossils didactic collection, and elaborated a comprehensive catalog that also comprises exercises and practical activities. Here, we present the methods we used for the expansion of the collection and describe two practical activities that can be applied in undergraduate classes and that involve the use of slides from the didactic collection. These activities aim to introduce fundamental concepts of Paleontology and to develop observation skills and scientific reasoning in students. The microfossils collection implementation and the practical activities can be easily applied in other educational institutions. Besides making the classes more dynamic, they can help to improve students learning.
