Abstract
Introduction. To be recognized, a researcher must disseminate the science he/she produces. Objective. This paper addresses the hallmarks of geoscientific writing, a skill that requires continual effort to improve. Methodology. Several rules and guidelines help to develop the skill of geoscientific writing. A good manuscript is read and corrected many times by the author, and subjected to plagiarism detection tools, errors in citations or in the use of original sources; in severe cases, a problematic article may be retracted by the geoscientific journal that published it. Results. A geoscientific communication may be analytical, expository or argumentative, except for narratives, which belong to a special case. Five steps help to transform vague ideas into clear and direct text: (1) define the type of the text for writing; (2) define goals, using inspiring questions; (3) write the first draft; (4) reinforce the work with more sources and generate new versions of the text; (5) organize fonts. Conclusion. The introduction, abstract and title are written at the end of the process, when the limitations and main contribution of the work to the readership are already evident.
