Towards a linguistic theory of translation: interview with Laura Salmon

Abstract

The field of Translation Studies (TS) began to be systematized at the end of the 1960s, after an international conference organized in Bratislava (Slovakia) by Anton Popovič, which would result in the publication of the collection The Nature of Translation: Essays on the Theory and Practice of Literary Translation. From then on, the gap between Euro-American research on the subject, which focuses much more on translation historiographies, and Slavic research, which since the post-Second World War has a much more linguistic tendency began to deepen. With an approach that mixes both aspects, Professor Laura Salmon, from the University of Genoa (Italy), seeks to emphasize in her Teoria della Traduzione the importance of linguistic research and, implicitly, of the “decolonization” of this area of knowledge, as she explains in this interview for the journal Trabalhos em Linguística Aplicada.
