Resumo
O presente artigo tem como foco a série The Alexander-Dewey arithmetic, escrita por Georgia Alexander, editada por John Dewey e publicada em 1921. Buscou-se identificar o contexto de produção da referida série, explorando conceitos como lugar social e recurso ao discurso autorizado, bem como elementos que a conectam com a educação progressiva e o pensamento de Dewey. A discussão apoiou-se em teóricos como Michel de Certeau e Roger Chartier. Além da própria série de aritmética, as principais fontes foram a correspondência de Dewey e revistas pedagógicas dos EUA. Entre as constatações, percebe-se que tanto o discurso veiculado pela série quanto a recepção pela crítica colocam em evidência o aspecto social, o recurso a situações reais e a criança enquanto autora de sua aprendizagem.
