Abstract

Linguistic differences are factors that may influence the teaching and
learning of mathematics. In this perspective, the study of linguistic difficulties
faced by the majority of English language learners, in the United States, is an
educational question that must be studied and researched, because they are
performing unsatisfactorily on standardized tests. Thus, the objective of this
article is to discuss language as an important factor for the teaching and
learning of mathematics that influences the manner in which these students
learn mathematical content. In this regard, the linguistic diversity that is
present in the classrooms offers us possibilities to understand the influence that
language has on mathematics and how this influence results in different ways in
which this subject is used, communicated, and transmitted among members of
the school community.
