Abstract

This research aimed to present a review of the state of the art of
research on statistic literacy amongst papers published in Brazilian congress proceedings and Brazilian scientific journals related to Education and to
Mathematics Education. Papers published between 2001 and 2006, referring to
kindergarten education and first years of elementary education, were selected
and analyzed. In 20 congress proceedings analyzed, 51 papers have been found.
As regards to Brazilian scientific journals, all volumes of 48 journals classified
by Qualis-CAPES as A or B in Education and/or in Mathematics Education in
the last year, and we found only seven papers referring to statistic literacy to
these school levels. We observed an absence of researches discussing the
statistics concepts and didactical proposition that could give support to teachers
to understand how and why it is important to teach those concepts since the
first school years. We believe to be essential the understanding of systems
representation to take individual or collective decisions. Also, developing these
competences is important to form citizens. In this sense, it is fundamental that
researchers need to take more attention to be published in the way to help
teacher and teacher training to understand student’s statistics learning process.
