Abstract

This work is a report on “Mathematics and School”, a project in preservice Mathematics teacher training that has been taking place at Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG) since 1987. We describe the origins of the project, placing in it the context of a tendency which has been present I the training of teachers in Brazil since the nineteen-eighties. We also make a description of some activities that have been developed and finally we make an attempt to evaluate the role of “Mathematics and School” in Mathematics teacher training, emphasizing the importance of an integrated work of the Department of Mathematics with the Faculty of Education.
