Abstract

In this article, we present results of a study conducted with
mathematics teachers in Piraí, state of Rio de Janeiro. This municipality has
implemented a pioneer policy of digital inclusion: the Piraí Digital Program. The
aim of this research was to verify the teachers’ understanding of the purposes and uses of three software programs — Cabri, PowerPoint and Excel — for
teaching mathematics. We conducted visits and informal discussion, and
teachers completed questionnaires. The results show that teachers have a
general knowledge about the aim of each software program and illustrate their
apparent understanding of such purposes in mathematics teaching. However,
we found some inconsistency in the teachers’ answers. The research
recommends that public policies need to provide follow-up and support for
teachers to implement educational computing in their classes.
