Abstract
In this paper we describe a short course given to mathematics schoolteachers in the city of Campinas, SP. This short course on Environmental and Mathematics Education was intended to give teachers a chance to use mathematical tools in quantifying and understanding communal problems related to the quality of life. Besides the training in modeling, fieldwork, ethnomathematics and data collection, the course brought about a modification in some important concepts. This is discussed and illustrated in the text.
