Abstract

The article intends to approach the 1st Havana Biennial and the 2nd Johannesburg Biennial to analyze the importance of reflecting on the research methodology used to study the biennials. Both exhibitions reveal how the intersections between art, politics and society act in an exhibition and offer paths with many points for reflection on the importance of an interdisciplinary analysis of art history. To escape from reductionist readings of the histories of exhibitions, a methodological option is to adopt a social perspective that counteracts the analysis of these events to the history of local art and the political context in which they operate.
