Abstract
This paper discusses the quality and importance of the science textbooks utilized in 6th grade elementary school classes in municipal schools of Maceió-AL, from 2017 to 2019. It also seeks to highlight the relevance of teaching geology in basic education, for the education of students. The research procedure adopted the content analysis method (CA), which consists of well-defined steps and categories. The analysis was applied through visual representations (maps, photographs and illustrations/schematic representations). We worked with the theme Geology, based on the following contents: Geological Time, Structure of the Interior of the Earth, Theories Related to Plate Tectonics, Minerals and Rocks, Natural Phenomena of Geological Origin, and Soils. Among the main results obtained were problems related to visual representations, involving graphic quality and absence of the main elements that help in reading and interpretation of representations.
