Abstract

Teaching evolution has many challenges, including the comprehension of geological time by students. Thus, animated movies about ancient forms of life may be the starting point for discussions about the theme. This work, part of an ongoing research, analyses two animated children´s movies (The Land Before Time and Ice Age 3) regarding the representation of anachronisms in the construction of the characters. We also point and discuss the geological and paleoclimatic context of the stories. We note that The Land Before Time has some scientific accuracy, despite showing two anachronic characters. On the other hand, Ice Age 3, in addition to contemporaneously showing animals that are separated in time by millions of years, deals with the last glaciation of Pleistocene as the only glaciation event since the dinosaurs. From a didactic point of view, both feature films have potential to integrate a discussion about geological time in science classes. In the future, we expect to create a didactic tool to help science teachers to approach macroevolution and the geological and climatic past of the planet.
