Abstract
A pedagogic evaluation was applied in the begining of the school year to pupils of a public school studying at the second to fourth grade of the Elementary School. Their performance in mathematical operations was analysed I a total of 185 evaluations, containing 930 calculations. An analysis of errors I additions and subtractions lead to the identification of the following categories of errors: 1) incorrect reproduction of task; 2) error of counting; 3) errors in the “assemblage” of the arithmetic operation, with five subcategories; 4) errors in the summing up with values bigger than ten; 5) specific errors of subtraction. The errors of type of 3 to 5 were attributed to the lack of comprehension of the positional value of the algorisms in the numeric decimal system; suggestions are presented on the improvement in the strategies of mathematic teaching, aiming the reduction of those errors.
