Abstract

This article aims to examine current practices in digital reading and to reflect on its implications on the reader behavior. The research subjects were students of the Faculty of Education, Federal University of Uberlandia in 2010. We developed a structured approach based on qualitative socio-historical research, and adopted the case studies of ethnographic type. Through semi-structured interviews it was possible to collect data and then analyze according to the theories that underline the work based on two conceptual pillars: the conception of man as a social, cultural and historical being postulated by Vygotsky (1999) and historical and sociological analysis of reading practices according to Chartier (1999). The results showed that digital reading changes the modes of reading in any support and therefore can be understood as a tool that promotes the overcoming of man’s limitations in reading.Practices reading have been following developments in technology, so the man needs to truly adapt to new media textual reading does not lose its function which is to inform, provide the assimilation of new knowledge.
